Wall Street Awaits Crucial August Inflation Data from PPI and CPI Releases
Investors will get the August Producer Price Index on Thursday and the Consumer Price Index on Friday, data that will shape market expectations and Fed policy.
This week, Wall Street will receive two key inflation indicators: the August Producer Price Index on Thursday, revealing cost shifts at the wholesale level, and the Consumer Price Index on Friday, offering a detailed look at retail price movements for items such as food, furniture, clothing and services like travel and auto repair. The data come as inflation stays above 3% and exceeds wage growth, tightening household budgets and business margins.
Energy prices have risen due to the United States' war with Iran, which has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a conduit for roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies. Additional upward pressure stems from persistent tariff disputes between the United States and many trading partners. Although the Federal Reserve has kept its benchmark rate unchanged, markets anticipate at least one rate increase this year to steer inflation back to the Fed’s 2% goal.
Why it matters
The inflation reports will influence market moves and Fed decisions that affect borrowing costs for consumers and businesses.
