Wall Street bets on hair-loss drugs as the next biotech gold rush

Investors are flocking to firms developing new hair-loss medicines, sending stocks like Veradermics and Absci sharply higher.

The triumph of GLP-1 obesity drugs has redirected biotech capital toward hair-loss therapies, a market affecting millions yet lacking new approvals since the 1990s. Existing options like minoxidil and finasteride carry side effects, leaving a sizable out-of-pocket demand. Veradermics announced positive data for an oral minoxidil tablet in men and women, propelling its stock up almost 500% since February, while Absci’s AI-engineered shot ABS-201 is expected to deliver interim data later this year.

Cosmo NV’s clascoterone topical, built on its acne product Winlevi, targets the hormonal cause of male-pattern loss and aims for a U.S. filing in early 2027, with analysts estimating $3 billion in sales. Industry voices such as Gil Blum and Roger Song argue the space can accommodate several products, noting that cash-pay consumers could generate strong revenues despite the inherent risks of drug development.

Why it matters

New hair-loss drugs could create a multi-billion-dollar market and reshape biotech investment trends.
