Wallabies star Mark Nawaqanitawase undecided on World Cup allegiance amid club move
Mark Nawaqanitawase has delayed confirming his national team for next year’s Rugby World Cup after signing with Japan’s Wild Knights.
Mark Nawaqanitawase, who helped the Sydney Roosters win the NRL championship, has opted to focus on his new contract with Japan’s Wild Knights rather than rejoin the Wallabies for the Nations Championship. The move means he will not declare his international allegiance until after the season, making him eligible for Italy or Fiji after a three-year stand-down period. He cited a desire to recapture the winning experience he enjoyed at the Roosters, not financial gain, despite a reported $3 million two-year deal.
Wallabies coach Les Kiss said recent discussions with the cross-code star were constructive, while captain Harry Wilson believes Nawaqanitawase’s loyalty is clear, and former player Matt Giteau argued the team should not have to persuade him. Nawaqanitawase also highlighted his mixed Fijian-Italian heritage and the personal factors influencing his choice.
