Wallonia's budget chief warns of soaring debt and calls for spending cuts

In a briefing, Adrien Dolimont, who heads both the Walloon government and its budget ministry, labeled the region’s debt growth as “enormous” and warned of a negative spiral. The Court of Auditors has identified a high risk that the debt may soon become unsustainable, and the Planning Office echoed concerns about its manageability. Current deficits remain sizable, far from the target of a balanced budget by the end of the 2029 legislative term.

Dolimont stressed that achieving balance is essential but also called for a multi-year perspective on fiscal sustainability, suggesting some flexibility may be needed. He concluded that without a change in spending habits, future generations could face an unmanageable fiscal burden.
