Walmart, Target and Amazon remove Nazi-themed Halloween costume after backlash
Walmart pulled a Nazi-style costume from its site after public criticism, and the item was also removed from Target and Amazon.
Orion Costumes supplied a Nazi-inspired “German Army Soldier Adult Costume” that included a jacket, trousers, attached boots, a belt and a hat, and it was listed by Walmart, Target and Amazon. The retailer described it as a vintage-themed costume, but promotional photos placed the model before a German flag, leading to accusations of glorifying a hateful symbol. After a wave of criticism, Walmart removed the item, and Target and Amazon followed suit by Thursday morning, all without providing an explanation.
The New Republic contacted the three companies for comment, but none had responded when the story was published. This follows a recent controversy in which Target withdrew a racially offensive costume after similar outcry. The incidents highlight heightened scrutiny of retailers’ Halloween merchandise choices.
