Walmart to Introduce Tap-to-Pay at Checkout Across U.S. Stores
Walmart will begin offering tap-to-pay options at select U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations from Aug. 24, with a rollout to all sites by the end of 2026.
Walmart announced that tap-to-pay technology will be installed at select U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club stores beginning Aug. 24, with a plan to extend the capability to all domestic locations by the end of 2026. The contactless option will accept eligible cards, smartphones and smartwatches, and will later be added to the company’s fuel stations by mid-2027. This rollout is part of a broader strategy to boost convenience after a 24% rise in U.S. e-commerce sales for Walmart and a 26% increase for Sam’s Club in the second quarter.
President and CEO John Furner highlighted the importance of price, speed and convenience in driving that growth. Customers will also be able to add Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to digital wallets, complementing existing payment choices like cash, credit cards and Walmart Pay. The initiative reflects Walmart’s ongoing effort to expand its financial-service offerings and enhance the shopping experience across both physical and digital channels.
Why it matters
The rollout gives millions of shoppers a faster, contactless way to pay, reinforcing Walmart’s push for convenience amid strong online growth.
