Wandsworth Council proposes near-doubling of Band D council tax by 2027

The Conservative-run borough says the rise is necessary after national Fair Funding reforms trimmed its grant by £84 million. The proposed hike would represent a 94% jump, lifting annual payments by £958 for Band D households. Council officials warn the cuts have already shaved 40% off spending for services such as parks, waste collection and street cleaning.

Deputy leader Peter Graham has called on ministers to reconsider the policy, arguing residents should not shoulder the burden of an unfair funding formula. Wandsworth is among six authorities permitted to exceed the usual 4.99% tax cap without a local referendum.
