Warner believes 49ers secondary outperforms its low statistical rankings
Linebacker Fred Warner says the San Francisco 49ers' defensive backs are better than their poor Pro Football Focus grades suggest.
Fred Warner told reporters that the 49ers' defensive backfield appears stronger than its Pro Football Focus metrics indicate, noting the group’s tight coverage and tackling. The team entered the season without a corner ranked in the PFF top 32, and starters Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green posted grades near the bottom of the qualified list. Warner praised the unit’s versatility, including their performance in the flat and run support, and cited rookie Upton Stout’s breakout season as a bright spot.
He also mentioned the competition added by newcomer Jack Jones, which could push Green for a starting role. While Warner remains upbeat, he cautioned that the secondary must continue to gel before the regular season begins, starting with a Week 1 game in Australia against the Rams.
Why it matters
Warner's confidence could shape expectations for the 49ers' defense as the season begins.
