Washington river restoration lifts threatened chum salmon returns from under 1,000 to over 30,000
A $9.7 million restoration of Washington's Big Quilcene River has raised summer-run chum salmon returns from under 1,000 in the early 1990s to about 32,600 each year.
The Big Quilcene River on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula once supported fewer than 1,000 summer-run chum salmon annually, a decline caused by historic logging, poorly designed roads and loss of side-channel habitat. Starting in the 2000s, a partnership that includes NOAA Fisheries, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Quinault Indian Nation, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, Jefferson County and local conservation districts launched a $9.7 million restoration effort.
The work targeted sediment reduction, floodplain reconnection and natural channel processes. By 2026 the project is in its final stage, and NOAA reports average adult returns of roughly 32,600, a dramatic rebound for this ESA-listed population. The achievement offers a model for other Puget Sound watersheds and underscores the value of long-term, science-based habitat investment. Continued monitoring and upkeep aim to sustain these gains and support cultural and educational uses of the river.
