Waymo expands driverless Ojai van service to all riders in three major cities
Waymo announced that its Ojai robotaxi vans are now open to any passenger in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles.
Waymo confirmed that its Ojai-branded driverless vans are fully available to the public in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles. In promotional posts the company highlighted the vehicle’s spacious cabin and built-in back-seat entertainment system. The vans had been offered on a restricted basis in those cities earlier in the year, and this marks the second expansion announced within a week after receiving clearance to run autonomous cars in Sacramento and San Diego.
Despite the model’s name, service has not yet reached the town of Ojai, California. Recent headlines for Waymo have been mixed, including a temporary suspension of freeway rides in May and a recall after some units entered closed construction zones, with highway access restored in July.
Why it matters
The wider availability of Waymo’s driverless vans signals growing public access to autonomous transportation in key U.S. markets.
