Wedding feast in Benalmádena leaves half the guests sick, authorities probe

Around 40 of the roughly 80 attendees at a wedding in Benalmádena were treated for food-borne illness, prompting a health investigation.

A wedding held on Saturday at the Estival Torrequebrada hotel in Benalmádena saw roughly 80 guests attend a multi-course meal that later triggered a suspected food-poisoning outbreak. Within an hour of the main courses being served, many diners reported diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain and fever, with around 40 seeking treatment at emergency departments. Symptoms appeared at different times, some during the night and others the following morning, leading several households to call ambulances.

The regional ministry of health has launched an investigation, ordering inspections and sampling of the dishes, as required by law for events of this size. Officials note that improper storage or insufficient cooking are common causes, but the exact source remains unknown. The hotel has not provided a statement despite multiple inquiries.

Why it matters

It highlights food-safety risks at large events and the need for swift public-health response.
