Weekly insulin injection could replace daily shots for UK type-2 diabetics

A new weekly insulin formulation, shown to work as well as daily doses, may soon be available on the NHS after regulatory approval.

A weekly insulin jab, proven to be as effective as daily injections, is poised to become an option for the large cohort of UK type 2 diabetes patients, potentially reducing injection frequency by 86 %. NICE has issued guidance supporting its use on the NHS, yet final access depends on licensing by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Diabetes UK argues the regimen will especially help those with frailty, visual impairment, limited hand mobility or learning disabilities.

The organization stresses the importance of informed choices and reducing care inequities. NICE’s director of medicines evaluation noted the recommendation reflects rigorous evidence and fiscal prudence. While England’s NHS typically follows NICE advice, Wales often mirrors it, whereas Northern Ireland and Scotland have separate review processes.

Why it matters

It could simplify diabetes management for millions and lessen strain on caregivers and the NHS.
