Weighing the Benefits and Drawbacks of Using a Television as a PC Display

Using a TV instead of a traditional monitor can work, but differences in size, resolution, latency and color handling mean the choice depends on how the computer is used.

Choosing a television as a computer monitor is feasible, but several technical factors influence its suitability. While TVs deliver bigger panels at modest cost, their pixel density is lower than that of most monitors, causing small UI elements to appear less sharp at typical desk distances. Input latency on TVs usually ranges from 9 ms to 12 ms, compared with 1 ms to 4 ms on monitors, a gap that can affect competitive gaming.

Refresh rates above 60 Hz are easier to find on monitors, offering smoother motion for fast games. On the upside, TVs incorporate dedicated upscaling processors and often support newer HDR standards such as HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, providing a richer viewing experience for movies and streaming. Color depth may be limited on older or budget TVs to 8-bit, whereas HDMI 2.1 devices can deliver 10-bit or higher.

Additionally, TVs typically come in a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, lacking the ultra-wide or curved options available in the monitor market. Users should match the display type to their primary computer activities—gaming and productivity favor monitors, while media consumption leans toward TVs.
