Welbeck scores debut Chelsea goal in 2-0 League Cup win over Luton

Danny Welbeck headed Chelsea's first goal as the Blues beat Luton 2-0 to advance in the League Cup.

In a League Cup second-round match at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea defeated third-tier Luton 2-0 to move on to the competition's third round. Danny Welbeck, aged 35, marked his first goal for the Blues by heading in a delivery from Malo Gusto after a goalless first half. The decisive moment came when Hakeem Odoffin inadvertently put the ball into his own net following a dangerous ball from Estevao.

Goalkeeper Mike Penders started in place of Robert Sanchez, who had struggled in the previous game. The win books a home fixture against Leeds in the last 32, and manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly close to signing Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.

Why it matters

The result keeps Chelsea alive in the League Cup and showcases Welbeck's contribution under new manager Xabi Alonso.
