West Bengal chief minister orders probe into alleged 2021 leg injury hoax

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state will investigate claims that Mamata Banerjee fabricated a leg injury during the 2021 election campaign, citing a medical report that found no fracture.

West Bengal's government will launch a new investigation into the 2021 leg injury claim made by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, according to current chief minister Suvendu Adhikari. During a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, Adhikari displayed a medical report from Bangur Institute of Neuroscience that recorded no fracture or dislocation in Banerjee's left leg. He labeled the original allegation as a false statement that insulted the people of Nandigram and promised further information after the model code of conduct lifts on October 9.

The upcoming Nandigram by-election is set for October 6, with results expected three days later. In 2021, Banerjee had said she was pushed against her car door by an unknown crowd, resulting in severe bone and ligament damage to her left ankle and foot, as well as bruising elsewhere, and she continued campaigning from a wheelchair. The Trinamool Congress won a decisive victory in that election, securing 216 of 294 seats.

Why it matters

The probe could reshape political narratives ahead of a crucial by-election in West Bengal.
