West Bengal moves Muslim IPS officer after Hindutva groups object to her greetings

West Bengal’s administration transferred IPS officer Bushara Bano on Monday, two days after Hindutva outfits raised objections to her use of Islamic greetings in a video posted online. Bano, who had spoken about the Aligarh Muslim University’s Residential Coaching Academy helping her prepare for the UPSC exam, was moved from her role as additional superintendent of police in Paschim Medinipur’s Kharagpur to become deputy commanding officer of the State Armed Police’s 4th battalion.

The complaints, lodged by The Jaipur Dialogue and one outlet Legal Fund, argued that a serving officer should employ national slogans rather than religious salutations. The same transfer order also affected two other officers. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra criticized the state government, accusing it of yielding to hate propagated by certain media outlets.
