West Coast states and BC commit to electric truck corridor from Canada to Mexico
California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Baja California announced a joint plan to create a zero-emission trucking corridor along Interstate 5, aiming for fully electric Class 8 trucks by 2030.
At a ceremony in the Port of Long Beach, officials from California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Baja California launched the BC2BC Zero Emissions Vehicle corridor, a collaborative effort to enable electric Class 8 trucks to travel the full length of Interstate 5 from Canada to Mexico. The 1,381-mile stretch moves nearly 10,000 trucks each day, with peaks of 35,000, carrying agricultural, lumber and consumer goods.
Participants agreed on shared policies, uniform charger siting intervals and common technical standards, building on existing stations and planning to add hundreds more by 2030. The corridor is expected to reduce diesel-related nitrogen-oxide and greenhouse-gas emissions, which disproportionately affect port communities and urban neighborhoods. Funding could be drawn from the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, despite recent legal challenges. Industry voices, including IMC Logistics and the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis, welcomed the plan as a catalyst for broader adoption of zero-emission freight.
