West Nile virus hospitalisations rise to 38, with 15 patients in intensive care
Greece's National Public Health Organization reports 20 new West Nile cases this week, bringing the total to 443, with 38 patients currently hospitalized.
According to the most recent report from the Εθνικός Οργανισμός Δημόσιας Υγείας, Greece has logged 20 new West Nile virus infections in the last week, taking the 2026 total to 443 confirmed cases. Currently, 38 patients are hospitalized, including 15 in intensive care and 23 in standard wards. To date, 47 fatalities have occurred, all in individuals older than 52, with a median age of 82 years.
The outbreak is concentrated in numerous municipalities, notably Larissa (45 cases), Spata-Artemi (21), and several areas of Attica and Central Macedonia. Authorities also identified a list of municipalities deemed "high-risk" despite no recorded cases there yet, based on proximity and epidemiological factors. EODY cautions that reported numbers likely underestimate the true extent of infections.
