West Nile virus spreads to sixteen European nations, causing deaths
Health officials report that West Nile virus has been confirmed in sixteen European countries, with several fatalities recorded.
According to the latest update from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, West Nile virus has been detected in sixteen European countries, including Italy, Greece, Romania, France, the Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Croatia, North Macedonia, Belgium, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Kosovo, Albania and Cyprus. While many infected individuals experience only mild flu-like symptoms or remain asymptomatic, roughly one in 150 develop severe conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis or paralysis, which can lead to high fever, confusion, muscle weakness or coma.
Fatalities have already been reported among vulnerable groups, particularly older travelers and those with pre-existing health issues. There is currently no specific medication for the virus; treatment is limited to supportive care in hospitals for severe cases. Authorities stress that the only effective prevention is protecting against mosquito bites through repellents, clothing and eliminating breeding sites.
