Western Australia launches $21 million fund to aid Albany gas customers' transition
The Western Australian government has created a $21 million program to support households in Albany as ATCO phases out its mains-gas network, with ATCO contributing $5.5 million voluntarily.
ATCO announced the shutdown of its mains-gas system in Albany, a regional city about 420 km south of Perth. Because the company has no legal duty to reimburse customers, it has pledged $5.5 million toward a state-run transition fund totaling $21 million. The fund is intended to help residents switch to alternative energy sources. Decommissioning work is slated to start before July 2027 and is expected to last three years.
Why it matters
It provides financial help for Albany residents as their gas supply is shut down, easing the shift to alternative energy.
