Western Australian mother survives house fire that razed her Boyup Brook home
Lisa Fawcett escaped a blaze that destroyed her Boyup Brook house, while her son jumped from a window to get out.
In the early hours of Sunday, a house in Boyup Brook, Western Australia, was engulfed by flames, prompting Lisa Fawcett, who was sleeping, to awaken to thick black smoke and rush for the exit. Her son, whose bedroom filled first, attempted to retrieve belongings before leaping from a window to escape. Fire crews arrived shortly after 10 a.m., and South West Acting Superintendent John Bowman indicated the fire likely stemmed from an electrical fault in a heater or its proximity to fabric.
Neighbours assisted by disconnecting gas bottles and moving the family’s car, and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services is still investigating the cause. The home, under-insured, was completely destroyed, erasing personal items including heirloom jewellery and photographs of Fawcett’s late partner. The community has provided temporary accommodation in Bridgetown, and the family suffered only smoke-related irritation rather than severe burns.
