Western Singapore records very unhealthy PSI as transboundary haze lingers

On Sunday, western Singapore's 24-hour PSI hit 228, placing it in the very unhealthy range, while the rest of the city-state remained in the unhealthy band amid ongoing haze from Kalimantan.

Air quality monitoring on Sunday showed western Singapore's 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index at 228, classifying it as very unhealthy, while the remaining four regions recorded PSI values from 129 to 186, all within the unhealthy range. Hourly PM2.5 concentrations across the country varied between 79 and 132 micrograms per cubic metre. The National Environment Agency linked the haze to ongoing fires in Kalimantan, with southeasterly winds carrying smoke toward the island, and also noted haze over Sumatra.

Forecasts predict a wind shift to the south-southeast or south, which should lessen the Kalimantan plume, though some Sumatra smoke may persist, and rain is expected over Singapore in the next two days. Several outdoor activities, including the FA Cup final and the Great Eastern Women's Run, were cancelled or postponed, and The Purple Parade was moved to early 2027. The Ministry of Health urged the public, especially the elderly, pregnant women, and those with heart or lung conditions, to rely on hourly PM2.5 readings for mask decisions, recommending well-fitting N95, KN95, FFP2 or KF94 masks when levels are high.

Why it matters

Persistent haze poses health risks and disrupts daily life and events for Singapore residents.
