Western Sydney secures $3 billion in road upgrade contracts, construction to begin this year

Contracts have been awarded for a suite of $3 billion road upgrades spanning Mamre Rd, Elizabeth Dr, Garfield Rd East, Henry Lawson Dr and Horsley Dr in Western Sydney, with construction anticipated to commence later this year. The federal-state partnership will focus on widening lanes and modernising key intersections, aiming to boost capacity for the region’s expanding population and the forthcoming Western Sydney International Airport.

Federal transport minister Catherine King said the funding will unlock network capacity, while NSW Deputy Premier Prue Car stressed the benefits for families and blamed opposition parties for past delays. The two largest contracts, each worth $1 billion, cover the Mamre Rd and Elizabeth Dr projects, with Gamuda BMD JV handling the latter and Fulton Hogan tasked with Garfield Rd East. Additional works will create dual carriageways on Henry Lawson Drive and Horsley Drive, linking major motorways such as the M5 and M7. NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison confirmed the schedule is on track for a year-end start.
