WFP calls Nepal's August floods one of its toughest relief missions
The World Food Programme said the August 26 floods in Nepal rank among its three most challenging disasters, relying on helicopters and cargo drones to reach isolated victims.
An August 26 glacial collapse on the China-Nepal border unleashed a tsunami-like flood that devastated mountain districts, destroying infrastructure and killing at least 1,446 people, with more than 6,500 still missing. Riaz Lodhi, head of the World Food Programme in Nepal, labeled the response as one of the agency's top three most demanding operations, citing extreme access challenges that require helicopters and costly air deliveries.
In a breakthrough, WFP deployed cargo drones capable of carrying 30-100 kg of food, delivering aid within minutes instead of days. The UN is working with Nepal's government, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, to funnel emergency supplies into cut-off areas while planning four to six months of food assistance. Despite the aid, the flood has wiped out crops, homes and food stocks, creating a prolonged humanitarian need and a reconstruction bill estimated at US$4.78 billion.
