WhatsApp upgrades account protection with flexible passwords, multiple passkeys and caller details

WhatsApp announced a suite of security enhancements, including an upgraded two-step verification that allows users to set a custom alphanumeric password with symbols, making the previous six-digit PIN optional. The platform now supports multiple passkeys per account, enabling seamless login across iOS and Android devices via biometric methods like Face ID or fingerprint, which reduces reliance on vulnerable passwords. For Android users, incoming calls from unknown contacts will display extra details such as the caller’s country of origin and any mutual groups, helping to identify potential spam.

These updates follow earlier changes such as the launch of usernames for number-less profile sharing and the introduction of a paid WhatsApp Plus subscription that offers extra customization and analytics features. Together, the changes aim to simplify and strengthen account security as phishing and hacking tactics become more sophisticated.
