Whey Protein Prices Spike as Global Demand and Trade Tariffs Squeeze Supply

Global demand and new U.S.-Canada tariffs have driven whey protein powder prices to record highs, squeezing manufacturers and consumers.

Demand for whey protein has surged as food brands and fitness influencers add it to everything from popcorn to coffee drinks, creating a tight global supply. In the United States, prices for whey protein concentrate have more than doubled in the past year and a half, and a 50 % tariff imposed on September 8 on American whey imports has pushed Canadian costs even higher. Canadian snack maker Daryl’s Bars, which sources most of its whey from Wisconsin, says the price hikes have eroded margins and forced price increases.

The U.S. Dairy Export Council notes that domestic demand is “insatiable,” limiting export availability. Analysts predict the tariff-driven surge will ripple through the supply chain, making protein-rich beverages and supplements more expensive for consumers, some of whom are already turning to plant-based alternatives.

Why it matters

Higher whey prices raise the cost of many protein-rich foods, affecting consumers and food manufacturers worldwide.
