White House concerns trigger postponement of SEC crypto framework approval

SEC officials delayed the rollout of a digital-asset regulatory framework after White House staff raised worries that a related rule could stall crypto legislation.

A planned SEC meeting to consider two cryptocurrency proposals was called off after White House officials expressed concern that the innovation exemption could hinder a pending crypto bill. The agency subsequently voted on the primary regulatory framework alone, with an SEC spokesperson attributing the change to an "unforeseen scheduling issue." A separate source disputed any direct link to the legislation, noting the rules were still technically under review.

President Trump is scheduled to meet with crypto industry leaders at the White House while the bill, which would codify the SEC's current stance, remains stuck in the Senate. The upcoming gathering will feature CFTC Chair Mike Selig, SEC Chair Paul Atkins, adviser Patrick Witt, and representatives from firms such as Coinbase, Kraken, Ripple, Chainlink, Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm, Nasdaq, and Intercontinental Exchange, alongside trade groups like the Digital Chamber, Crypto Council for Innovation, and Blockchain Association. Prediction-market platform Kalshi was initially slated to attend but was removed following a recent teleprompter controversy.
