White House warns DSA-backed immigration plan could cost taxpayers up to $613 billion

A new Council of Economic Advisers report says immigration policies supported by the Democratic Socialists of America may cost U.S. taxpayers between $440 billion and $613 billion over the next decade.

According to a Council of Economic Advisers analysis, immigration reforms championed by the Democratic Socialists of America could generate $440 billion to $613 billion in taxpayer expenses over ten years, chiefly through mass amnesty and expanded benefits such as SNAP, housing aid, and Medicaid. The study places the average fiscal impact of an undocumented immigrant at $166,716, surpassing the cost of a four-year public college education.

It further warns that rolling back current enforcement would eliminate $227 billion to $287 billion in projected savings, resulting in an additional $79 billion to $139 billion in net costs. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis framed the findings as a safety and affordability threat, contrasting them with President Trump's record of reduced illegal-immigrant releases. The report also includes an interactive tool suggesting the broader DSA agenda could total $49 trillion in costs over a decade.

Why it matters

The estimates could shape voter perceptions of immigration policy ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
