Why adding a second router often backfires and better alternatives
Using two routers in router mode creates a double-NAT setup that can cause connectivity issues, while mesh systems or access-point mode usually solve coverage problems more cleanly.
When a household adds a second router and leaves it in router mode, the new device creates its own private network and performs NAT, leading to a double-NAT configuration. While most everyday internet use remains unaffected, tasks that rely on direct device connections—such as gaming, port forwarding, or UPnP—may suffer, and devices on separate subnets can struggle to see each other. For improved coverage, a mesh Wi-Fi system is designed to extend a single network across multiple nodes, avoiding the complications of multiple routed networks.
Existing routers often include an access-point (AP) mode, which disables routing functions and lets the primary router handle traffic, making the secondary unit act merely as a Wi-Fi extender. If Ethernet ports are the only need, an Ethernet switch can expand wired connections without altering the network topology. When an ISP-provided gateway is present, enabling bridge mode on that device or switching the user’s router to AP mode can prevent double NAT, though the exact steps vary by provider and hardware.
