Why Classic Video Games Shine on Vintage CRT Displays
Retro titles appear superior on old cathode-ray tube screens because those displays were designed for the games' original resolutions and motion handling.
Classic consoles output at resolutions such as 240p and 480i, formats that CRTs could display without the scaling artifacts common on today’s LCD and OLED panels. The electron-gun scanning method of CRTs provided superior motion clarity, masking low or inconsistent frame rates that modern displays reveal. Additionally, CRTs handled interlaced signals natively, avoiding the de-interlacing lag and visual noise introduced by flat-panel processing.
Pixel-art designers also employed dithering to smooth color gradients, a trick that only works with the phosphor glow of CRTs. Modern TVs often lack proper composite inputs, and when they do, the signal is noisy, further degrading image quality.
