Why waking from vivid dreams can leave you feeling exhausted
Remembering a dream usually means you awoke during REM sleep, which interrupts deep, restorative sleep and can cause fatigue.
Most dreaming takes place during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which accounts for roughly 20-25% of total sleep time and occurs in several cycles that lengthen toward morning. When a person awakens during or immediately after a REM period, they are more likely to remember the dream, but that brief arousal also steals time from deep sleep, the stage most effective at clearing the waste product adenosine. This reduction can leave the brain less refreshed and cause a groggy, foggy state known as sleep inertia.
Brain imaging shows that during REM the brain is highly active, especially in emotional centers, while the prefrontal cortex is less engaged, producing vivid, illogical experiences. Frequent awakenings can lead to a REM rebound, where the brain attempts to make up for lost REM time on later nights, but the underlying issue remains fragmented sleep. Those who regularly recall vivid dreams and feel tired each morning may need to address the factors disrupting their deep sleep cycles.
