Whyalla steel plant sale stalls amid furnace shutdown and community anxiety

Whyalla's steelworks has been emitting steam for months, a sign that its aging blast furnace is offline and threatening roughly 400 direct steelmaking jobs plus numerous contractor roles. After GFG Alliance's collapse, the South Australian government forced the plant into administration, with KordaMentha administrator Sebastian Hams expecting a deal by month-end. However, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis warned the transaction could slip beyond that timeframe, as bidders Jindal Steel and M Resources compete for the asset.

Residents like former worker Marty Hilton and shop owner Wesley Fisher expressed hope that the furnace might be revived, while contractor Roger Jordan highlighted growing unease about the town's economic future. The state estimates a temporary jobs gap before any replacement technology is installed, but also points to upcoming mining projects that could eventually boost employment.
