Widespread 911 Outage Hits Ontario and Several Canadian Cities
A technical failure has disabled 911 emergency calling across much of Ontario and in cities such as Toronto, Waterloo and Winnipeg, prompting officials to advise residents to use non-emergency numbers.
A system-wide outage has taken 911 emergency calling offline across large parts of Ontario and in several Canadian municipalities, including Toronto, Waterloo and Winnipeg. As of early Thursday morning, Toronto police, Durham Region and the Ontario Provincial Police confirmed the disruption, while York and Peel police announced that service has been re-established in their areas. Bell, the provider of the 911 infrastructure, acknowledged the problem.
Emergency responders advise the public to reach police, fire and ambulance services through their listed non-emergency telephone numbers, though some 911 calls continue to be processed. Toronto paramedics noted that a limited number of calls are still getting through the system. The situation remains under monitoring.
