Widespread CrossCountry train cancellations follow Birmingham power outage

A power failure at CrossCountry’s control centre in Birmingham forced the operator to suspend almost all services across the UK until further notice.

A sudden power cut at CrossCountry’s Birmingham control centre disrupted the signalling and scheduling infrastructure, leading the train operator to halt services on nearly all of its routes. Cancelled lines include the Manchester-Birmingham corridor via Stoke-on-Trent, Coventry and Wolverhampton, as well as services from Leeds to York, Cheltenham to Cardiff and Glasgow to Edinburgh. The sole route slated for near-normal operation runs between Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport.

CrossCountry said it is working closely with relevant partners and will issue updates as the situation evolves. Passengers can use tickets on alternative operators, claim refunds if they choose not to travel, or seek Delay Repay compensation for delays of 30 minutes or more.

Why it matters

The disruption affects thousands of travelers and highlights vulnerability of rail operations to power failures.
