Widespread looting and destruction leave Paris streets littered with debris

Violent groups swept through Paris, targeting shops and setting vehicles and bicycles on fire, while police recorded a record number of arrests.

Following large-scale demonstrations, Paris saw a surge of violent activity that targeted hundreds of businesses and resulted in widespread destruction. Areas including République, Sébastopol, Madeleine and Faubourg Saint-Honoré were hit hardest, with shops smashed and streets strewn with debris. Vehicles and bicycles were set ablaze throughout the capital, and a late-afternoon wave of looters focused exclusively on stealing and vandalism, according to the Paris police prefecture.

Authorities detained 855 people, a figure described as a record high. The deputy mayor called the city’s condition "total ruin" and stressed that such chaos cannot be allowed to happen again. The mayor wrote to the interior minister demanding a meeting to address the crisis.
