Widespread lycée blockades spark violent clashes and school closures across France

Students have blocked hundreds of high schools in cities such as Paris, Lyon and Marseille, leading to extensive damage, police injuries and the closure of around 400 schools.

Since Thursday, a coordinated student movement demanding additional resources has triggered blockades at high schools in cities from Nantes to Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Rouen. Officials count about 900 incidents and close to 2,000 detentions, with over 300 police and gendarmerie members wounded. The education ministry reports 65 staff members and 170 students injured since the protests began.

Prefects across all departments have issued orders prohibiting gatherings near the roughly 400 schools slated to remain shut on Friday. Minister of Education Édouard Geffray plans talks with unions and student associations, while the interior ministry attributes the unrest to La France insoumise, a claim contested by the party’s coordinator Manuel Bompard.

Why it matters

The school blockades disrupt education for thousands and heighten tensions between students, police and the government.
