Widespread Power Outages Sweep Occupied Crimea After Substation Attack

An overnight strike on the Taman substation in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai cut electricity to the entire Crimean peninsula, leaving major cities in darkness.

Satellite data from NASA FIRMS confirmed damage to the Taman substation in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, a critical node that supplies electricity to occupied Crimea via the Kerch strait. Following the strike, Telegram channel Exilenova+ reported that the whole peninsula was without power, a claim supported by local accounts and online monitors. Major urban centers—including Sevastopol, Yalta, Simferopol and Alushta—experienced complete outages, while NetBlocks documented extensive internet disruptions.

Sevastopol’s Russian-appointed governor Mykhailo Razvozhaev attributed the loss of power to an enemy attack on infrastructure outside the city, and initially announced a temporary blackout. Although officials later announced that power had been restored in several locations, the Crimean Wind channel said residents continued to face blackouts in multiple cities. The extent of the outage could not be independently verified at the time of reporting. This incident follows previous attacks on Crimean energy facilities, including a summer wave that hit 16 stations in 48 hours.

Why it matters

The blackout highlights the vulnerability of Crimea’s energy supply amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
