Wife recounts the heartbreaking moments after Diogo Jota and brother's fatal crash

Rute Cardoso described the frantic hours following the July 3, 2025 Lamborghini crash that killed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva.

Diogo Jota married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto, and just days later he and his brother André Silva set out for a ferry to the UK. On July 3, 2025, the brothers were traveling in a hired Lamborghini when it crashed on a motorway in Zamora, Spain, killing both. Rute recounted how she sent a final WhatsApp message that was never delivered, then frantically called her sister, a friend, André’s girlfriend Paula, and an uncle who worked as a lorry driver, hoping for any sign of the pair.

With no answers and growing concern, she finally received confirmation that the two men had died. In the wake of the loss, Reach Sport is publishing a biography that includes interviews with family, teammates and managers, honoring Jota’s achievements and his role as a husband and father of three.
