Wikimedia Foundation staff vote overwhelmingly to join CWA union

Over 200 staff members at the nonprofit behind Wikipedia voted 158-14 to join the Communication Workers of America, a result certified by the U.S. National Labor Relations Board. The union will represent employees in roles ranging from software engineering to finance and communications, reflecting growing frustration with recent management actions, including the dissolution of a tool-development team and the removal of France as a hiring location.

Employees emphasized that the push was driven by a desire for a clearer voice in organizational decisions rather than compensation issues. The Wikimedia Foundation responded in an unsigned blog post, stating it will handle the next phase constructively, lawfully, and with care for its staff. In solidarity, some volunteer editors launched a campaign to enhance Wikipedia entries about labor unions. CEO Bernadette Meehan described the unionization as the start of a new chapter and expressed optimism about reaching a timely agreement.
