Wildfire near California-Nevada border forces I-80 closure and evacuation alert

A blaze dubbed the Floriston Fire ignited near the California-Nevada border, prompting an evacuation warning and the shutdown of westbound I-80 at the state line.

The Floriston Fire started around 10 a.m. about nine miles northeast of Truckee, California, and quickly spread to roughly 20 acres. CalFire said the fire threatens Interstate 80, the Truckee watershed and nearby natural resources. As a result, the westbound lanes of I-80 at the Nevada border were closed with no set reopening time. An evacuation warning was issued for the area identified as NCO-E379.

Why it matters

The fire disrupts a major interstate route and poses risks to water resources and local ecosystems.
