Wildfire smoke threatens prenatal health gains from cleaner air policies

A new University of Maryland study finds that increasing wildfire smoke is undoing air-quality improvements for pregnant women, raising risks of premature and low-birth-weight infants.

A study released in Frontiers in Environmental Health indicates that rising wildfire smoke is erasing the prenatal air-quality benefits achieved since the 1970 Clean Air Act. The University of Maryland, College Park team examined how smoke exposure during pregnancy raises the probability of infants being born prematurely or with low birth weight, outcomes associated with higher infant mortality and long-term health problems.

While overall emissions of major pollutants have fallen by nearly 80 percent, climate-driven fires are creating toxic smoke that surpasses other sources in danger to fetal development. The researchers highlighted that low-income, rural and Indigenous populations experience the greatest adverse effects. Senior author Michel Boudreaux emphasized the focus on this vulnerable group, noting that the findings underscore a new public-health challenge as climate change intensifies fire activity.
