Wildfire threatens homes near Calca as locals battle flames amid government inaction

A blaze that burned for five days near Calca, north of Cuzco, forced Ana Maria Hualpayuca and her mother to seek shelter before returning to a charred home.

In the Calca district north of Cuzco, a wildfire raged for five days, forcing Ana Maria Hualpayuca and her mother to flee to an uncle's house across the road. After the flames halted just meters from her home, Hualpayuca returned to a landscape of blackened slopes and sparse vegetation, checking the area several times daily for any rekindling. Nearby residents, such as Placido Erasmo Quispe, fought the fire without proper gear, using soaked clothing and any water they could gather.

The blaze killed numerous wild and domestic animals, though some escaped. As the community works to recover lost farmland, they express concern that the fire could affect larger parts of the country, criticizing the Keiko Fujimori government for its apparent lack of response.

Why it matters

The incident highlights local vulnerability to wildfires and perceived government neglect in Peru.

  • government inaction and criticism of Keiko Fujimori
