Will Smith, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting catcher, returned to the batting cage at Dodger Stadium on Friday, his first on-field activity since a neck injury forced him out in early June. The injury, an inflamed disc, required a cervical injection and a month of inactivity, during which the team halted his baseball duties. Manager Dave Roberts reported that Smith has been engaging in limited weight training, throwing, and now batting practice.

Outfielder Teoscar Hernández observed that Smith appeared in good condition while moving about the clubhouse. The Dodgers had explored veteran catcher options at the trade deadline, but Smith’s apparent recovery could keep the roster unchanged. His return is seen as crucial for the club’s pursuit of a third consecutive championship.
