William Jewell football player dies after sideline medical emergency in season opener

A medical incident on the sideline of William Jewell College’s season-opening football matchup led to the death of junior running back MicahJo Barnett on Saturday. Barnett, a business administration student from Liberty, Missouri, had previously guided Liberty North High School to a state championship and started five games in the 2025 season before a season-ending injury. The game against Fort Lewis College was halted and later postponed, with both institutions releasing statements of sympathy; Fort Lewis College Athletics announced counseling resources for its own team.

William Jewell College issued a statement offering prayers to Barnett’s family, teammates and the broader community, and scheduled a vigil for 8 p.m. that evening.
