Williams siblings revive father's Instagram to counter AI misuse

Zelda, Zak and Cody Williams have reopened Robin Williams' Instagram, aiming to make it a reliable hub for genuine photos and videos while fighting AI-generated impersonations.

Zelda, Zak and Cody Williams disclosed that they are taking control of Robin Williams' dormant Instagram profile, intending to transform it into a trusted archive of real images and videos. Their stated purpose is to push back against the growing problem of artificial-intelligence tools that replicate the actor's voice and appearance without permission. Last year, Zelda publicly urged followers to cease sending AI-generated footage of her father, describing the practice as distressing.

Although some AI services have built-in safeguards, workarounds still allow the creation of deepfake content, as seen with OpenAI's former Sora app and other models highlighted by Wired. By curating authentic material, the siblings hope to preserve their father's legacy and deter misuse of his likeness online.

Why it matters

It shows how families are confronting AI deepfakes that threaten celebrity reputations.
