WindBorne Secures Near-$50 Million U.S. Air Force Deal for Balloon Data
The U.S. Air Force awarded WindBorne Systems a contract worth up to $49 million for data from its autonomous weather balloons.
WindBorne Systems, a Redwood City-based company that operates roughly 700 autonomous weather balloons worldwide, has secured a U.S. Air Force contract valued at up to $49 million. The agreement allows the service to buy specific regional atmospheric data whenever required, with an initial $1.7 million order already placed and expectations of additional purchases. Co-founder and CTO Andrey Sushko explained that the non-competitive award reflects the Air Force’s determination that only WindBorne could meet its data-collection needs.
The funding will support expansion of the balloon constellation and ongoing research and development of the hardware. WindBorne’s AI-driven forecasting model, WeatherMesh 6, claims higher accuracy than the traditional ECMWF model, and the firm recently demonstrated unpowered balloon flight into a typhoon’s eye. The contract underscores growing reliance on AI-enhanced weather data for military operations.
Why it matters
The deal highlights the increasing importance of AI-driven atmospheric data for U.S. defense and forecasting.
