Winnipeg Jets suspend goalie Connor Hellebuyck amid ongoing trade dispute

The Winnipeg Jets suspended veteran goaltender Connor Hellebuyck after he missed the start of training camp, a move that was disclosed on Wednesday. Hellebuyck, who is in the third year of a seven-year contract extension, publicly requested a trade in August through his agent Ray Petkau, emphasizing that a move would be best for his family. He had earlier voiced frustration with the team’s failure to reach the playoffs and reiterated his goal of winning a Stanley Cup.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is expected to discuss the suspension with reporters on Thursday. If the suspension remains in effect when the regular season begins, Hellebuyck will forfeit his $8.5 million salary and his contract will not count against the salary cap.
