Winnipeg mother rescues drowning child and father from Red River
Jayclyn Morrissette pulled a child and her father from the Red River in Winnipeg on Aug. 24 and performed CPR until help arrived.
On the evening of Aug. 24, Jayclyn Morrissette was at St. John’s Park in Winnipeg’s North End when she noticed a young girl flailing in the Red River and the father leaping in to save her. Within seconds she jumped in herself, pulling the panicking father to safety before returning for the child, who was not breathing. Morrissette performed CPR on the wet grass as emergency responders arrived, and the girl was taken to hospital, later reported to be in stable condition.
Police praised her “remarkable courage and selflessness.” In the days after, Morrissette suffered neck and shoulder injuries, required pain medication, and experienced vivid nightmares about the incident. She downplays the hero label, saying she was simply in the right place at the right time.
