Winter Fuel Payment letters to be mailed this October, but not all will receive one

The Department for Work and Pensions will send out Winter Fuel Payment notices in October, though some eligible people may not get a letter.

The Department for Work and Pensions is preparing to dispatch Winter Fuel Payment letters in October for the 2026/27 winter season. Eligibility is limited to those born on or before 27 June 1960 who usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, and the payment ranges from £100 to £300 depending on age and household circumstances. Most qualifying individuals will automatically receive a notification this month or in November, with the actual payment scheduled for November or December.

Certain groups—such as people normally residing outside the UK, those in prison, or those receiving free hospital treatment during the qualifying week—are excluded. Recipients with an income over £35,000 will have the payment reclaimed through HMRC via tax adjustments. Those who do not receive a letter should verify whether a claim is required.

Why it matters

It informs eligible seniors how and when they will receive crucial winter heating assistance.
