Wisconsin Socialist Lawmaker Francesca Hong Opposes New Child Grooming Felony Bill

In a largely bipartisan vote, the Wisconsin Assembly approved a bill that elevates child grooming to a felony, responding to a high-profile case involving a teacher accused of a months-long relationship with a 14-year-old student. The measure cleared the chamber 93-6 and was signed by Governor Tony Evers in March. However, Assemblywoman Francesca Hong and five other Democrats, all part of the Socialist Caucus, voted against the proposal, arguing it amounts to hate-speech legislation.

Hong, who is currently leading in the Democratic primary for governor, offered no public rationale for her vote, and her campaign did not respond to inquiries. Opponents of the bill, including Rep. Angelina Cruz and Rep. Christian Phelps, claim the language targets LGBTQ+ educators. The new law has already been used to charge suspects within a week of taking effect.
